O’Callaghan is hoping Peamount can close the gap
PEAMOUNT United senior ladies team manager James O’Callaghan is hoping his side will hit the ground running when action resumes in the Women’s National League next week.
Having entered a near month-long break, during which the Ireland National team has continued their World Cup qualification campaign, the league has seen defending champions Wexford Youth return to the top of the table, a point the better of Peamount who have played a game more.
Ireland international Karen Duggan will be hoping to help Peamount top the table
O’Callaghan’s side dropped two points in their last outing against third place Shelbourne, shipping a late goal that effectively denied them top spot in the group ahead of the break.
Speaking about that match, O’Callaghan told The Echo: “We had lots of chances in the first half, but we just didn’t take them and it came back on us.”
Now hoping to make up lost ground and get their hands on the elusive title they just missed out on on the closing day of last season when they lost to Wexford, O’Callaghan added, “Wexford and Shels, between them, have won the last five titles and have vastly experienced players, but we want to be breaking into that group.
“I’d like to think that we’re bridging the gap. We almost bridged it last year but we’ll be hoping to go further this season.
“There’s Wexford, Shels and ourselves at the top right now, but all the teams in the league are getting better.
“Kilkenny away is our next match. They have a lot of ex-Peamount players so it’s going to be a tricky game and we won’t be looking past them,” he insisted.
Three points will be a must for the Newcastle side who, the following week, welcome Wexford to Greenogue in another crunch fixture.
On another note Peamount have been drawn to face Cork City WFC away in the semi finals of the Continental Tyres WNL Development Shield on the week-ending September 2 with Wexford Youths and Shelbourne battling it out in the other fixture.
