
Olympics 24: Ireland lose out to New Zealand in high-speed clash
HEARTBREAK for Ireland’s Rugby sevens as a 13th minute try pushed New Zealand to a win during a high-speed clash this afternoon.
The game was lost after New Zealand won a penalty, which resulted in New Zealand 14 Ireland 12.
Now, Ireland will face Fiji in tonight’s quarter-finals, which kicks off at 9pm Irish time in the Stade de France.
If Ireland can bring Fiji’s unbeaten Olympic record to an end they will play the winners of Australia v USA in Saturday’s semi-finals.
St Mary’s Rugby clubman Terry Kennedy is competing for Ireland in the Olympics, his second outing at the games.
Kennedy, who is a member of the Sevens squad since 2016, has won an All Ireland 1B title in 2017 with St Mary’s has plenty of experience at this level having played for his country at the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Cape Town.
His father Terry is a former Ireland international and are supporters of St Mary’s Rugby Club.
