On This Day in 1992: Michael Carruth clinches gold at the Olympics in Barcelona
On this day in 1992 Ireland was celebrating after local favourite Michael Carruth clinched a gold medal at the Olympics in Barcelona.
The country came to a standstill on the morning of August 8 1992, and the man from St Peter’s Road in Walkinstown did not disappoint as he overcame Juan Hernandez Sierra from Cuba.
Carruth described the fight as the hardest of his life at the time, and speaking afterwards, with his father Austin by his side, he said: “He was a good puncher, a good technician, but I just stuck to the gameplen.
“The plan worked out and we got the gold medal we came for.”
The gold medal was Ireland’s first at the games in 36 years.
