A TARGETED anti-burglary operation is taking place in Tallaght and Rathfarnham in direct response to a rise in daytime break-ins across the area.

Alongside normal patrols, an operation of surveillance and unmarked patrols will be taking place across the Tallaght policing district, which includes Tallaght and Rathfarnham.

Tallaght district Superintendent Ian Lackey has secured resources for the response, which will be in operation across the Tallaght district.

According to Supt Lackey, while there are still a few night-time burglaries, a rise in daytime break-ins has been recorded in recent weeks.

“A dedicated operation is starting across Tallaght and Rathfarnham,” Supt Lackey said.

“Burglaries are slightly down in Rathfarnham and slightly up in Tallaght [when compared to this time last year].

“However, in recent weeks there has been a number of daytime burglaries when people are away [from their homes].

“There has been a rise in daytime burglaries, and clusters of burglaries across various estates in the district.

“The operation will involve surveillance and plainclothes patrols… alongside uniformed gardai.”

He added: “We are asking people to report anything unusual, code callers, bogus workmen, bogus charity collectors . . . anything strange, call us.

“Anything that is in any way suspicious, give us a call.

“We are reliant on witnesses and CCTV.”

Asking people to be extra cautious, Supt Lackey reminded homeowners to think security, especially in the run-up to Christmas.

If leaving the house make sure that alarms have been activated, a light is on, windows locked and a neighbour informed that the house is empty.

While the operation is district-wide, it will also focus on a number of areas that have been specifically targeted by burglars in recent weeks.
