People get into shape at operation transformation
By Aura McMenamin
ROUND Towers GAA club are hoping to get Clondalkin locals in shape and eating right for the New Year and beyond.
The GAA club had 100 people sign up on last week's first Operation Transformation (OT) event, which saw participants walk 5km from the clubhouse, around the Village and back.
Organisers are hoping to get 30 more registrations at next Monday’s meet.
For seven weeks, OT participants will walk 5km on Mondays and Wednesdays and take part in a run in Corkagh Park on Saturdays.
According to club volunteer Cathal O’Donoghue, anyone who signs up will be asked to take part in weigh-ins on Wednesday evenings and will also have the chance to listen to talks on all things related to fitness and health such as physiotherapy, psychotherapy, mindfulness, and nutrition on Mondays.
Cathal said: “On Monday evening, we had last year’s RTÉ Operation Transformation leader Sean Daly from Clondalkin. He told people how he lost 6 ½ st through the show.”
This year’s leaders are local councillor Francis Timmons (46), Tricia Kelleher (39), care assistant Amy Mannix (32), plasterer and dad-to-be Enda Cosgrove (39) and Jessica O’Malley (45).
The leaders will each be assigned a personal trainer, with some trainers taking on more than one leader.
Paul Stewart from Pure Fitness will take on Enda and Tricia, Andrea Bassett from Waist A-Weight will take on Jessica and Francis and Sabrina Conlon, or ‘Coach Conlon’ will be paired up with Amy.
Each leader will have a food plan given to them, which other registered participants can follow.
Cathal said: “Each leader is given a food plan by their personal trainer – anyone can follow their food plan or the food plans on the RTE website for each of the five leaders on the show.
“We’re trying to move away from the weighing scales and [instead] change eating and lifestyle habits.
“For example, none of the five leaders eat breakfast – everybody needs to eat breakfast!”
The closing night is on February 21 in the Clubhouse, where the leaders will get made-over by local barbers and beauticians for their big reveal.
