Over 440 garda Covid-19 compliance checkpoints in Ballyfermot district

OVER 440 garda checkpoints have been carried out in the Ballyfermot policing district to ensure motorists are complying with Covid restrictions.

According to gardai, there have been “442 checkpoints” in the area, targeting “road traffic offences and compliance with Covid-19 regulations.”

Meanwhile, there have been 647 “proactive patrols” carried out in the Ballyfermot area targeting anti-social behaviour.

On a national level, gardai issued approximately 1,500 fines in a two week period (January 11-25) for non-essential travel.

Since the introduction of the penalty on January 11, people can receive an on the spot fine of €100 for breaching Covid-19 regulations.

A fixed penalty notice will be issued by gardai for those who travel beyond the 5km limit and refuse to turn back.

An Garda Síochána is reminding people that they are only allowed to travel or exercise within 5km of their home.

Not only can the driver be fined, but all adult passengers face a fine too.

“This is also the case for adults in groups undertaking activities such as cycling or walking – every adult in such a group can be fined”, according to gardai.

The public were remined this week that travel to airports and ports should only be taken for essential reasons and holidays abroad are not deemed essential.
