Paleo diet firefighter forges ahead with delivery service

A TALLAGHT firefighter is the spark behind a new Paleo diet delivery service, which, in the space of six months, has created six jobs and increased the number of meals it’s preparing weekly from 20 to 1,000.

Originally from Killinarden but now living in Kilnamanagh, firefighter Anthony Carey has been following the Paleo diet for around four years, during which time he regularly gave diet and training tips to friends and family.

However, he noticed that while a number of his friends wanted to follow the Paleo diet, they didn’t have the time to shop for the right food and prepare the recommended meals – a reality which Anthony turned into a business opportunity called Paleo Ireland.

Anthony told The Echo: “I’ve been following the Paleo diet for a number of years and it encouraged me to eat healthily, I feel great and can maintain my optimum weight.

“I’m eating meats, vegetables and whole foods, and most importantly cooking my own food, which cuts out the consumption of fatty, processed foods.

“Friends have over the years approached me for advice, but within a week some of them were coming back saying that they didn’t have the time to source and cook the Paleo meals.”

The Paleo diet, also known as the cavemen diet, has become popular in recent years and focuses on the consumption of foods eaten by early humans, such as meat, fish, vegetables and fruits and excluding cereal, dairy and processed foods.

Anthony approached a team of chefs – whose kitchens for a city-centre restaurant are based on the Greenhills Road – about preparing fresh Paleo meals for delivery.

The meals are based on menus drawn up by Anthony, which include dishes such as chicken Caesar salad, chicken sweet potato soup, beef stir-fry, chilli con carne, turkey mince bolognaise, curried chicken and parsnip soup and paleo beef stew.

“We are preparing fresh, healthy, paleo meals which have no gluten, MSG, additives or refined carbohydrates,” Anthony said.

“Meals are high protein and contain essential fats. We deliver a €50 paleo box to customers which includes lunch and dinner for a week.”

The joint business, between Anthony and the team of chefs, has to date created six jobs, with four more expected within the year.

Anthony said: “We plan to expand the kitchens to go nationwide and are planning to hit 4,000 meals by this time next year.

“We’ve bought a refrigerated van, so are hoping to start delivering up and down the whole Eastern seafront.
Paleo Ireland is also running a six-week Paleo Challenge and is starting to deliver Paleo lunches fresh into Tallaght businesses daily.

There is also a deli, called Patrick’s Deli, linked to the kitchens on the Greenhills Road, which sells Paleo friendly lunches and products.
