Parents so proud of Olwen’s All-Ireland football success
By William O'Connor
THE PARENTS of Dublin ladies football star Olwen Carey are over the moon this week with their daughters achievement in helping the county win the All-Ireland final in Croke Park on Sunday afternoon.
The talented Thomas Davis midfielder played a huge role in guiding Mick Bohan’s side to capture the Brendan Martin Cup - the second time the county has won the title.
Olwen’s mother Sinead spoke of her delight and the wonderful victory the team recorded on Sunday.
“I’m hugely proud of Olwen and all the girls. They have put in a huge effort this year and to win the All-Ireland is just amazing,” she told The Echo.
“There was a huge sense of relief when the final whistle went. I don’t normally get emotional but I did shed a tear. I was simply delighted for the girls. There was so much elation at the final whistle. It’s a great achievement for the girls. Their reaction at the final whistle just showed how much it meant to the team. They were so delighted to win the title.”
The team got great support this week particularly from Olwen’s club Thomas Davis and other local clubs in the area.
“ Olwen has received so much support from her club over the years, they have been fantastic and even last week they were very supportive to her. The players were calling in wishing her all the best and the neighbours put up flags which added to the atmosphere”.
Olwen’s parents are great Dubs supporters with Sinead coming from Drimnagh while her father Gerry is from Kildare.
“We love going to the games and supporting the Dubs and my son Evan plays basketball with Templeogue Basketball Club.
“It’s been a long season for the Dublin team so hopefully they can enjoy the success and the younger players in the county can look up to this fantastic group of players.”
