Peamount book place in National League Cup final

Peamount United booked their place in the Women’s National League Cup final after a commanding 3-0 win over UCD Waves, in their Semi-Final clash in Newcastle.

Much like the aircraft taking off in nearby Baldonnel and heading to the Bray Air display, the Peas put in a supersonic performance to book a final date with destiny against current league leaders Wexford Youths Ladies.

Aine O'Gorman was on target for Peamount United at the weekend

It took just two minutes for the Haughans Field side to open the scoring when Niamh Farrelly’s spectacular volley rifled the Waves net to make it 1-0.

They nearly doubled their lead on 27 minutes but Amber Barrett’s shot was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Erica Turner.

Whilst the opposition had a lot of possession, they could not breach a determined Peamount defence.

UCD almost equalised on 53 minutes, but Rachel Doyle’s effort was well saved by Naoisha McAloon.

The up-to-now impressive Turner in the opposition goal was to gift the Peas their second goal of the night on 65 minutes when she scuffed her attempted clearance that landed straight at the feet of the Barrett, and the Republic of Ireland striker duly slotted the ball into the back of the net.

The striker almost doubled her tally on 74 minutes, but her shot came back off the crossbar.

The Donegal striker was to play a key part in her sides third and final goal, as her expertly hit cross found Aine O’Gorman who poked the ball home from close range.

James O’Callaghan’s side reached the final last year as well, but lost out on penalties to Shelbourne, and they will no doubt be determined that this time it is they, and not Wexford, that bring the cup home.
