Peamount to the ‘four’ in DDSL Cup Finals
PEAMOUNT United enjoyed a hugely successful weekend at the DDSL Cup Finals, with their four finalists coming out on top in their respective deciders reports Hayden Moore.
After etching their name in the history books to win the very first DDSL Blakely Cup last year, Peamount’s Under 15 girls team continued to blaze a trail for girls in the competition.
The Peas won the league unbeaten a few weeks ago and completed the double when they recorded a 2-1 win over Knocklyon United in the Under 15 Girls Cup at the AUL Complex on Sunday afternoon.
With the game deadlocked at nil-all at half-time, the Greenogue side came flying out of the blocks and got their noses ahead when the brilliant Ella McGovern slotted home at the end of a counter attacking move.
Defenders Faye Cooney, Eabha Dowling and Orlagh Downes were solid at the back while the versatile Leah Walsh and technically savvy Emma Hudecova impressed for the Peas.
Shotstopper Emma Basset also excelled, the only blemish on her record coming when Knocklyon United’s Robyn Hempenstall equalised with the final kick of regulation time.
Peamount searched for an opening, and almost had it when Aoife Hennessy hit one from long-range, with Knocklyon’s goalkeeper tipping it around the post for a corner.
It was from the resulting Isabella Hayden corner that Peamount found their opening, with McGovern rising above everyone else to score her team’s very first headed goal of the season to win the cup.
Last year’s player of the season Ruby Codd, who it is hoped will be back playing next season after stopping playing due to an illness, celebrated the stellar victory with her teammates on the day.
In the Under 11 Girls Paul O’Connor Cup, Peamount got the better of Beechwood FC and the Under 15 boys lifted the Toft Cup after beating Belvedere 3-1.
Goals from from Lucas Ovas, Senan Maguire and Adam Kavanagh helped United past Belvedere, who had netted through Diego Elmonem.
In the Under 14 Paisley Deering Cup, Peamount United overcame Newbridge Town to claim the title on a 3-2 scoreline.
