Phenomenal Peas participate in the prestigious Gothia Cup

PEAMOUNT United were one of 1,900 teams participating in the prestigious international Gothia Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden, with the girls enjoying a great run to culminate their terrific season.

Over the course of the 2022/23 season, Peamount’s Under 14 girls team won all the silverware available to them and jetted off to Sweden last week to cap off their winning year in style.

Earlier on in the season, the Peas had won the league, regional cup, Molly O’Toole Cup and the All-Ireland and they brought their winning form into the Gothia Cup.

Taking place between July 17 to July 21, the Greenogue girls were representing Ireland among the 70 nations participating in the tournament and started on the right track.

Goals from Sarah Reynolds and Karla Moore inspired the Peas to victory in the first group game against Swedish outfit Eriksberg IF and it spurred them on.

A 1-0 win over American side Marin FC was followed up with an excellent 2-0 win against Boo FF, who are one of the top teams in Stockholm and won the tournament last time around.

With three wins from three games, the young Peamount team were flying high having topped their group and carried that form into the Last 32 of the competition.

Another American team, Seacoast United, awaited them in the first knockout stage game and the Peas came through it well, recording an emphatic 1-0 victory.

Iclandic outfit KA were next up, and it would turn out to be United’s last game of the Gothia Cup, slipping to a 2-0 defeat at the Last 16 stage.

KA played tough grueling games on the Friday, one of them against the Peas and another a gruelling penalty shootout win against Reading Rage, to eventually make it through to the final – where they were beaten by Hammarby IF.

18 players travelled over to Sweden as part of the Peamount United squad, which is the second in the club’s history to do so – with the first playing in 2019.

Having won everything they could in Ireland, it served as a great opportunity to step up and face top-quality international competition before moving into the Under 15 bracket next season.
