Plans for 45 new rapid build units at Cherry Orchard site
By Maurice Garvey
EARLY proposals for 45 new rapid build units in Cherry Orchard have been floated this week by Dublin City Council.
The proposals were contained in a housing report at Monday’s monthly meeting in Christchurch - an open green space at Cherry Orchard Gardens cited as a potential location for the development.
News of the 45 units were first revealed in The Echo in August, under Phase 2 plans for the Rapid-Build Programme, which also include 81 units in Springvale, Chapelizod.
The Cherry Orchard Gardens site is located close to where the first rapid build development in the area opened before Christmas – at Cherry Orchard Avenue.
“The difference between those units and this new proposal, is that Cherry Orchard Gardens would be Part 8 and would have to go to planning permission, whereas the previous rapid build development was under emergency powers,” said Daithí Doolan, Chairperson of the Dublin City Council housing committee.
“This plan is still very much in it’s infancy. The million dollar question is whether residents will want this in the area.”
He continued: “We’re in the midst of a housing crisis, any social housing is welcome. Unlike developments under emergency legislation, people’s opinions are encouraged with Part 8’s. I want to ensure people avail of that and get their views heard by Dublin City Council.
“I welcome the fact that another site has been identified by DCC. Some other sites have already been achieved, the first rapid site, and work which is currently going on for the 53 units behind Cherry Orchard Hospital and the 72 homes at Cherry Orchard Park. Further development is good for the area, and fits in with the development plan for Cherry Orchard.”
