Plans granted for energy retrofit at Railway Works

PLANS for an energy retrofit at the Inchicore Railway Works have been granted planning permission by Dublin City Council.

Iarnrod Eireann applied for permission for a material change to the Chief Mechanical Engineers building within Inchicore Railway Works.

The site is a protected structure under the city council development plan.

Plans contain proposals that include an energy retrofit of the existing building including the internal insulation of the roof and the internal drylining of the external walls, the introduction of internal secondary glazing and a mechanical ventilations system.

According to a planning department report, the proposed retrofit is to ensure its continued use as an administrative operation within the Inchicore Railway Works, the use for which it was originally constructed.

In 2021 Inchicore Railway Works celebrated 175 years working in the heart of the community.

Conditions subject to the planning permission by the city council include revised drawings for reinstatement of a lath and plaster ceiling to the technical services room, and a methodology for the repair of the ceiling.

A conservation expert shall also be employed to design, manage, monitor and implement the works and to ensure adequate protection of retained and historic fabric during the works, with all permitted works designed to cause minimal interference to the curtilage of the Protected Structure.

The city council granted planning permission on January 22.
