PLANS for the former site of Castletymon Library to house a retail unit with part off-licence use have been lodged with South Dublin County Council.

Janel Stores Ltd lodged the planning application for the Castletymon Shopping Centre unit last month, where they also sought permission for demolition of the existing projecting entrance porch and alterations to front elevation to give shopfront glazing and signage.

The original Castletymon Library, located in Castletymon Shopping Centre, closed in December 2017 when South Dublin County Council decided that they would not seek to renew the lease on the building as they claimed it was “unsuitable for occupation”.

A new library for the area is currently being developed on Castletymon Road, adjacent to the junction with Tymon North Gardens.

Work on the state-of-the-art €2.8m library development commenced in January last year, and progress on-site was discussed at a recent meeting of the Tallaght Area Committee.

At the meeting, South Dublin County Council stated that brickwork on the library has been completed to lintel level, floor slab work is also complete, however there has been a minor delay with the windows for the new library.

“It is expected that handover of the building will happen in quarter two, with a three-month fit-out of furniture and fittings following the handover,” the spokesperson stated.

A decision on Janel Stores Ltd’s planning application for the former site of the library is due from the council by February 7.
