Primary school planning to build extra resource rooms
By Aura McMenamin
A LOCAL primary school is seeking planning permission for the development of an extension to its existing school building as the need for extra resource rooms has become “urgent” following an increased allocation of resource teachers at the start of the school year.
St Martin de Porres National School in Tallaght has applied for permission for an extension comprising of four resource classrooms, with a corridor link located to the north of the existing school building.
There are provisions for connections to existing services and all associated works and site works.
Tom Sweeney, the principal of St Martin de Porres NS, told The Echo: “There are plans for four learning support rooms for children with special needs and children who need learning support.
“We want to get the extension because we don’t have enough accommodation in the school.
“[The need for an extension] really became urgent in the last year, as we were granted extra resource teachers.”
Mr Sweeney added: “Sometimes the children will be taught on a one-to-one basis in the resource rooms, or sometimes groups of six or seven children can be accommodated in the rooms.
“The extension is going to have the same red brick finish as the existing school building.”
A decision on the application, which was lodged by Toni Thompson, the Chairperson of the school’s Board of Management, is due from South Dublin County Council by February 20.
