Protect that green space with bulbs not bonfires

COMMUNITIES are being encouraged to opt for bulbs not bonfires this October, and to protect their community’s green space from the destruction of Halloween fires.

It’s that time of the year again when South Dublin County Council is encouraging people to have a safe Halloween by registering for the local authority’s Bulbs not Bonfires scheme – which sees communities that organise pro-environmental and non-bonfire orientated activities rewarded with daffodil bulbs for the spring.

According to the council: “[We are] encouraging people to have a safe Halloween by providing communities with daffodil bulbs to plant for lovely spring flowers instead of a scarred open space throughout the year as the result of a bonfire.

“Community groups, environmental groups, resident associations and schools can apply outlining a plan to create a safe Halloween.

“Applicants are requested to submit details of their project before the closing date of October 13 in order to receive bulbs for planting before Halloween.”

Alongside creating a safer Halloween and saving green spaces from destruction, planting bulbs not setting bonfires also saves the council money, which could be directed into community services.

The damage and waste left behind by bonfires costs South Dublin County Council around €50,000 each year.

Groups are encouraged to let the council know of their alternative Halloween activity and nominate a local site for the planting of bulbs.

Send applications to envawareness@sdublincoco.ie by Friday 13th October 2017 or visit www.sdcc.ie for further details.
