‘Providence’ site may be used for housing and community facilities

A 3.8 acre site in Ballyfermot could be developed for housing and community facilities, according to the Sons of Providence.
Proposals are at a very early stage for the 3.8 acre greenfield site, which is bounded by the religious order’s daycare services for older people on Sarsfield Road and accommodation services at Fr Bidone Court.

The initiative is a joint one between Dublin City Council and Orione Care – the working title for the Sons who have been delivering services from its site in lower Ballyfermot since 1970.
Residents are invited to community consultation meetings next week to discuss the proposals.
Stephen Rourke, an independent consultant with The Sons of Divine Providence/Orione Care, said the aim of the development is to benefit the population of lower Ballyfermot.
“The city council and Orione Care believe that there may be a level of interest from local residents in being accommodated in any new housing and in being able to attend activities and events in new community facilities which may be developed on the 3.8 acre site,” said Mr Rourke.
“In order to ensure that local people have opportunities to contribute their views and ideas about what should happen on the site two community consultation meetings have been organised.
Apart from a belief that something good and positive should take place on the site in relation to housing and community facilities there have not been any definite plans drawn up for the site. It is literally a greenfield situation.”
Mr Rourke said the main purpose of the consultation meetings is that the suggestions and recommendations of residents will be “seriously considered” by the city council and Orione Care when detailed plans are subsequently put together.
Residents are invited to attend the consultation meetings on Monday, October 21, between 7.00pm and 8.30pm in Ballyfermot Family Resource Centre, and on Wednesday, October 23, between 7.00pm and 8.30pm in Sarsfield House.
