Record breaker David Cryan loses over a stone after week one on OT
By Brendan Grehan
OPERATION TRANSFORMATION leader David Cryan from Lucan broke records this week when he lost over a stone.
It was the show’s biggest ever weight loss in the first week.
The whoops of applause could be heard as the Garda Community Sergeant, based in Dublin’s Bridewell Station, hit a weight of 19st 5.5lb on the scales. He had been aiming to lose 5lb in his first week but lost and amazing 1 stone 2.5lb.
David told The Echo that he has been sticking “rigidly” to the plan.
He said: “I stuck to the plan that is the secret. There is a lot of preparation involved. When I first saw the exercise plan given to me by Karl Henry, I asked Karl if I should be doing a little bit more. Karl told me to work harder during the sessions and I did that. After three or four days, I felt sore but it was a good sore. I phoned Karl back and told him he was right.”
The 38-year-old father of two set the pace for the show by smashing a record immediately.
David told the The Echo that his original plan was to get down to 16 stone.
He said: “My target was to lose a stone and a half during the show and lose another stone and a half afterwards. Now that I have lost over a stone, I will have to be very careful and stick to the programme. If I get down to 16 stone, the challenge will be to maintain that weight loss.”
When David’s weight loss was revealed, Karl Henry said: “I’m here 11 years, I’ve never seen a weight loss of sixteen-and-a-half pounds in seven days. It’s incredible. You just look like a different person.”
But dietitian Aoife Hearn said: “I’m actually not happy with the weight loss, I’m happy with the effort. And I just love to see people embracing the plan, sticking to it and showing that it works.”
David is originally from Roscommon and lives in Lucan with his wife Siobhán and their two children Dylan, five, and three-year-old Zoe.
David calls Zoe “a very special girl”.
Born prematurely at 24 weeks weighing only 540 grams. Siobhán is Zoe’s full-time carer as she has cerebral palsy, chronic lung disease and has to be fed through a tube.
