Remembering those who passed away to COPD

A SUPPORT group for people suffering from COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), held a ceremony at Ballyfermot Library to remember loved ones lost to the disease.
The event saw a bulb planting in the library garden and members giving a talk to the crowd, followed by refreshments and a chat.

Ann Murphy, a member of the COPD support group and patient representative of COPD Ireland, said this was the third time they held a remembrance day.
“The local mens shed made a lovely box for us and we did a planting in the library garden. Spring ushers in new life. Family members came along and we had a little service, then a talk and a remembrance.”
Una Gomez, Head Librarian Ballyfermot Library, said: “The group bought a lovely planter which was made for them by the local men’s shed. They each planted a bulb in remembrance of their loved ones in The Piper’s Garden at Ballyfermot Library.”
The local COPD support group is made up of members, most of whom go to St James Hospital and Peamount for treatment and checkups on their condition.
“We’re living with COPD, not dying with it,” said Ann, a Chapelizod resident.
“We have an exercise group every Tuesday at Liffey Gaels from 11am-12noon. Often there is between 18-21 people. It is a good chance to meet others and have a laugh.
“Every two months, we have a support group meeting in Ballyfermot Library, and there is a special speaker, such as a pharmacist or a consultant from the hospital. Members can ask them questions.”
