Repair costs of €650k due to anti-social behaviour

OVER €650,000 has been spent on repairing damages caused by anti-social behaviour by South Dublin County Council this year so far.

Works carried out by the council’s Public Realm Department to repair damages has cost an estimated €650,711 from the beginning of 2021 until the date of June 8, 2021.

In a report from the council, damages such as graffiti, illegal dumping, pitch maintenance and repairs and playground maintenance as a result of anti-social behaviour in South Dublin County have been revealed to cost the significant amount.

The increase of reports of anti-social behaviour across South Dublin County has been reported extensively in The Echo since the beginning of the year, with a significant increase in illegal dumping, pre-arranged fights and large groups congregating to engage in drinking and drug-use.

From January to June this year, removing graffiti has cost the council €15,795, playground maintenance has cost the council approximately €15,000, an estimated €5,000 has been spent on pitch repairs and maintenance and the highest amount – €614,916, has been spent on illegal dumping in the county.

The report also gave the breakdown of total expenditure on repairs and work carried out for the years 2019 and 2020 in relation to anti-social behaviour.

In 2019, €22,309 was spent on graffiti removal, €10,000 was spent on works repairing pitches and maintenance, €1,595,711 was for illegal dumping, €39,037 was spent for playground maintenance and €150,000 was spent by the council for Halloween related costs.

In comparison, in 2020 an additional €8,065 was spent on graffiti, totalling €30,374.

An estimated €10,000 was spent on pitch maintenance and repairs, €1,535,190 was spent on illegal dumping, approximately €40,000 was spent on works for playground maintenance and Halloween costs totalled at €120,000.
