Respected solicitor Pat was ‘very honourable’

THERE was widespread sadness and shock at the passing last week of a well-known and respected local solicitor.

Patrick (Pat) McMahon, Celbridge, Co Kildare and formerly of Lucan, and who practiced as a solicitor for many years in Tallaght, passed away at home, peacefully, with his family on June 18 after bravely battling illness.

Patrick practiced firstly with B.P. O’Reilly & Co Solicitors and then as Principal in McMahon and Company, The Village Green, which incorporated B.P. O’Reilly & Co.

Former Councillor Charlie O’Connor was “shocked” at the passing of Patrick.

“I had a lot of contact with and respect for Patrick, he was a long-standing Solicitor in Tallaght village. He was well-known in the area, his passing has caused a lot of shock in the business community and in Tallaght,” said Charlie.

The passing of Patrick is particularly tragic as it almost coincides with the anniversary of the death of his daughter, Eve.

“Patrick died last Tuesday [week] which was the day before the second anniversary [June 19] of his daughter, Eve, who died two years ago, so it’s all very sad,” said Charlie.

Charlie explained how Patrick came to end up practicing on the Village Green.

“Patrick was recently in Village Green. Prior to that he was with B.P. O’Reilly, which was located directly opposite the Dragon Inn. Brian O’Reilly, who was the Senior Partner in B.P. O’Reilly, died tragically in Co. Clare. Patrick was a partner with Brian and Patrick continued in that business,” said Charlie.

The former Councillor was also mindful of Patrick’s family.

“Patrick’s wife, Ursula, is Principal of Old Bawn Community School and he also has a son, Gareth and daughter, Lucy,” said Charlie.

Tallaght Solicitor John Glynn of John Glynn & Co Solicitors also remembered Patrick.

“He was a lovely person, a very nice guy, very honourable, he was always courteous and in good humour,” said John.

Patrick is also pre-deceased by his father, also Patrick.

Patrick is also survived by his mother Madeleine, sister Paula, brother Luke, parents in law Pat and Rose McCabe, extended family, cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Patrick reposed at his home on Sunday June 23, with removal on Monday, June 24, to St Patrick’s Church, Celbridge arriving for funeral Mass at 12 pm, followed by burial in Donaghcumper Cemetery.

On his death notice on rip.ie, Patrick’s family thanked the palliative care team from St Brigid’s Hospice, Curragh and the Irish Cancer Society daffodil nurse, Ger, for their kindness and care for him.

“Like a bird singing in the rain, let grateful memories survive in time of sorrow,” Patrick’s death notice concluded.
