Rovers amputee team complete cup double
SHAMROCK Rovers amputee team completed a remarkable cup double in the inaugural season of the Irish Amputee Football League.
The Hoops travelled to the home ground of Dundalk FC at Oriel Park on Saturday and there added the IAFA Fyffes Cup to the Manorfield Cup they won earlier in the season.
They ran out 2-0 winners against Cork City in their opening game in what was the perfect start to a tournament in which they would keep clean sheets throughout.
Indeed, the superb performances of both Patrick Hutton and Justin Guiney in goals went a long way to ensuring Rovers never conceded a single goal in any of their five games in this tournament.
Some excellent defending by Bohemians forced them to settle for a draw in their next match in which Alan Wall saw his late free kick smash off the underside of the bar before being cleared away.
Rovers impressed again in Round Two of the tournament’s group stage, proviing too strong for Cork City and subsequently securing a place in the final.
There they came up against a strong Bohemians outfit in a match that saw Rovers set the tone from early on as both Wall and Kevan O’Rourke were denied by a solid defence.
The Tallaght side continued to push in the first half, but it was not until the second that they served up, what would prove, the only goal of the match.
A corner kick move, that came straight from the training ground, saw Kevan O’Rourke provide the finishing touch, leaving the Bohemians keeper with no chance.
