Rovers’ Byrne rewarded with call up to Ireland senior squad

SHAMROCK Rovers player Jack Byrne was the only player from the League of Ireland picked as part of Mick McCarthy’s Republic of Ireland 40-man provisional squad for the upcoming UEFA EURO 2020 Qualifier against Switzerland – and he is only growing.

In recent months he has hit a purple patch of form and will be looking to hang onto his place when McCarthy cuts his selection down to the normal mid-20s mark.

After impressing on Monday night against Waterford through two top-drawer strikes from distance and a classy assist, Byrne will be hoping to see his side into the next round of the FAI Cup on Friday night.

Stephen Bradley and co kick started their pursuit for a first FAI Cup title in 32 years two-weeks-ago when Dan Carr elegantly fired home in a 1-0 win against Finn Harps.

But the Hoops will be without Carr when they host Drogheda United in the second round of the competition, after he departed the club on Monday evening for Cypriot First Division outfit, Apollon Limassol.

Both Rovers and Drogheda are in similar form with both sides placed second in the Premier and First Divisions respectively and with both taking part in six-goal frenzies in their most recent games.

United thumped Wexford 6-0, while Rovers ran out 5-1 winners against Waterford thanks to a brace from both Byrne and Aaron Greene with his replacement, 18-year-old Thomas Oluwa, sealing the win with his first senior goal on 88 minutes.
