Rovers hoping to keep heat on the champs

SHAMROCK Rovers will be hoping to stay on the heels of Airtricity League leaders Cork City when they take on Waterford at the Showgrounds tonight (Friday).

The Hoops have climbed to second place in the table following narrow wins over St Patrick’s Athletic and Limerick over the past week.

Stephen Bradley’s men have now already chalked up more points against St Pat’s than they managed in all three games last season after a Kevin Toner own goal on 77 minutes earned them a 1-0 victory over the Inchicore side last Friday.

And a solitary goal was all that was produced in Monday night’s encounter with Limerick, Graham Burke converting from the penalty spot after Ronan Finn had been fouled.

The win served to net the Tallaght side their first points on the road so far this season, leaving them just three off Premier pace-setters Cork City.

They now take on a Waterford outfit, who have made a solid start to their campaign with four wins from their opening six games, leaving them fourth in the table.

And it was only an injury time goal by Dundalk’s Patrick Hoban that denied them a share of the spoils in their last outing against the Lilywhites in Oriel Park.

Meanwhile St Patrick’s Athletic will welcome Limerick to Richmond Park tomorrow night looking to make a return to winning ways after their loss to Rovers.
