Rovers U17 women reach cup final
SHAMROCK Rovers U17 Women’s team have reached the final of the cup after a 2-1 victory over Galway United at Roadstone, reports James Ffrench.
Goals from Kassie McLoughlin and Amy Tierney won it for the young hoops as they progress to the Women’s u17 cup final.
Rovers started excellently and scored two early goals through McLoughlin and Tierney to set the tone for a very comfortable first half.
However, the second half would be anything but comfortable for the young hoops as they were put under immense pressure by Galway who changed their shape and pressed high as they chased goals.
United would pull one back and bombarded the Rovers goal in the last 15 minutes in search of an equaliser but they wouldn’t find one.
The Rovers defence dealt with everything the Westerners threw at them in the final quarter, with Ireland u16 international Keelin Comiskey shining brightest at just 15 years of age.
Rovers came into the game on a six game winning streak, including a 5-0 victory over Finn Harps in the previous round of the cup.
They finished top of the u17 Phase One Group A table, losing just once in their 12 respective matches with a remarkable goal difference of 60 goals.
In Phase Two Tier One, Rovers sit top once again, with five wins from six after a 3-1 defeat to Athlone Town, who they will face once again in the cup final.
Laura Fanning, Ella Kelly and Anna Butler, all members of the Rovers U17 squad, were also called up to the Ireland U17 squad for their friendly double header with Wales in Dublin this month.
However, all focus will be on Treaty United who they travel to face on Saturday as they look to maintain their position at the top of the table.
