Running track contract terminated

Running track contract terminated

THE NEW tender to complete Lucan Harriers new running track is expected to go out by the end of June. Earlier this year, the contractor  for the track, Crawfords, went into administration and work was suspended on the track, reports Brendan Grehan.

Recently, members of Lucan Harriers held a protest at the track and they called on South Dublin County Council to tarmac the track.

A Spokeswoman for Lucan Harriers told The Echo: “South Dublin County Council have terminated the contact with Crawford's. They looked at the option of laying a tarmac base while putting the rest of the works out to tender which had been requested by the club.

“There were problems with this as it would introduce a third contractor into the process and it may be unclear where liability would lie if there were an issue with the tarmac down the line. Also, any delays in having two separate processes would mean possibly going into the cold weather season when the synthetic track cannot be laid.”

She added: “The Council are going to re-tender the project having carried out surveys on the work completed to date.

“They hope to re-tender by the end of June. This would hopefully see works carried out before the cold temperatures which would not allow for the laying of the track. The Club thanks the Council,  public representatives and the Lucan Community for their ongoing support during this time.”
