CCTV from a nearby hardware store captured thieves scaling the gate to the back of the house on Peamount Road, before escaping into a grey BMW with two large safes a few hours later.

The couple who own the house did not wish to be named, but a family spokesperson viewed the CCTV footage and said: “You could see one guy walk up to the house and knock, then saw no one was home. You can see the car going up and down the street.”

“Three guys walked up to the front gate and scaled the electronic gate to the back.

Gardai confirmed that an amount of cash was taken from the house, and the family spokesperson added that the safes contained pieces of jewellery, sentimental items and personal documentation which they are keen to recover.

He said: “There were engagement and wedding rings belonging to the man’s deceased parents. They also took documents like passports and keys to their vehicles.”

He added: “They left the house a real mess, they rummaged through each room.”

Gardai confirmed the incident to The Echo: “Gardai are investigating a burglary at a property on Peamount Road, Newcastle, Co Dublin. This is believed to have occurred sometime between 12 noon and 2.15pm on 31st July 2017.
