School principal James retires as two new ASD rooms open
A DOUBLE celebration was held in St Kevin’s Boys’ School in Kilnamanagh last week, when two new ASD classrooms were opened, and principal James Murray was commended ahead of retiring.
Mr Murray has been principal of St Kevin’s since October 2000, after spending several years as a teacher in St Mark’s SNS in Springfield under esteemed principal Diarmuid Mac Mathuna.
When asked about what his first impressions of St Kevin’s were after being appointed principal, Mr Murray said: “I thought it was very warm, friendly and welcoming.
“I think the children have a great sense of kindness towards each other and have a genuine interest in their learning.”
Among the biggest changes that Mr Murray has seen over his 23 years in the school has been the focus on inclusive education, and he felt it was fitting that his send-off coincided with the opening of two new ASD classrooms.
“The most positive change I’ve seen is more inclusive education – there’s a place in the school for everybody,” he said.
“I’m very proud of the two ASD classes and it was fitting to combine the opening of them with my departure.”
Parents of children in the school gave presentations thanking Mr Murray for his support, energy and commitment to the community.
Mr Murray said he was moved by the presentations, while school secretary Marion O’Hara said that he was leaving behind “a great legacy” in the school community.
As he prepares to begin his retirement, Mr Murray said he wanted to thank the “wonderful colleagues and friends” he’s worked with over the years.
His plans for retirement include what he describes as a “mad idea” to walk from Dublin to his native Cork, and to spend more time with his family.
“I have mixed feelings on it,” Mr Murray said, when asked how he felt about retiring. “But I think it’s the right thing for the future of the school, and the right thing for me personally.”
