Schools from Tallaght, Clondalkin and Lucan impress in GAA headquarters

THERE was a feast of hurling and camogie action in the Cumann na mBunscol finals at GAA Headquarters on Monday.

Schools from Tallaght, Clondalkin, Lucan and Terenure participated in the first day of finals and what a performance they all put on.

In the Corn Nua showdown, Tallaght side Scoil Santain were playing in their first camogie decider in Croke Park and they came out tops 2-2 to 1-1.

Scoil Santain overcame the challenge of Sacred Heart from Sruleen in Clondalkin in what was a thrilling showdown.

Mary Ni Bhraonain, daughter of former Kilkenny hurling star James ‘Shiner’ Brennan was the star of the show for Scoil Santain as she scored all of her sides scores.

It was a point each at half time, but Ni Bhraonain led by example in the second half with two goals and a point to her credit.

Captain Emer Suan was another player that stood out for Scoil Santain as did Cait Ni Dhaltuin in defence.

At the other end of the pitch, Amber Doyle accounted for Sacred Heart’s point while Alyssa Rooney broke through for a well taken goal.

Sarah Fagan, Abbie Kirwan and Sophia Juneanaru were others to shine for the Clondalkin side who were also competing in their first camogie final.

Elsewhere, Scoil Aine from Esker in Lucan came out tops in the Corn Padraig MacGiolla Bhearraigh hurling final when they overcame another Lucan school St Andrew’s 4-7 to 1-2.

Conal Fitzgerald was one of the stars of the show for Scoil Aine when he scored three goals while Liam Collis at midfield put in a great show and scored a goal.

Adam Brien and Darragh McBearty were others to stand out for Scoil Aine.

Scoil Mhuire from Woodview in Lucan came out tops in the Corn INTO 5-2 to 2-6 after they saw off St Columbas Glasnevin.

After a slow start when they conceded a goal and a point, the Lucan side bounced back to only trail by a point at the interval.

Fleur Quinn scored a goal for the winners as did Nina Tominson while captain Caoimhe Buckley put in a Player of the Match performance.

There was only one score in the contest in the closing minutes, but Scoil Mhuire broke through for two goals in the closing stages.

Sophie Quinn was another player that stood out for the winners.

In the Corn Uí Mhaoilan camogie final, GS Naomh Padraig from Lucan were celebrating after they overcame St Benedict’s Ongar 1-3 to 1-1.

Chloe Ní Chárthaigh scored the Naomh Padraig goal while Siobhán Ní Riain, Jane Ní Mhaoilmhín, Aimee-Rose Ní Chléirigh scored a point each for the winners.

Jane Ní Mhaoilmhín and Aisling Ní Chúille played well for Naomh Padraig as did Saoirse Nic Suibhne and Muirrinn Nic Giolla Phádraig. Siobhán Ní Riain and Laragh Ní Lorcáin also played very well in midfield.

Alanagh Ní Lorcáin also played well when she came on as a sub in the second half.

Naomh Padraig keeper Saoirse Ní Shíoda, daughter of former Dublin footballer Jack Sheedy who won five Leinster titles, one All-Ireland, two NFL and 1 All-Star medal, was another impressive player for Scoil Mhuire.

It was the first time that Naomh Padraig won a camogie final in Croke Park.
