Security measures should be part of holiday preparations
By Mary Dennehy
WITH holiday season upon us, local gardai are reminding people to think home security – and not to post pictures on social media of themselves away on holidays.
Gardai at Tallaght have sent a targeted message to the community encouraging people to include home security as part of their holiday preparations.
Garda Sergeant Mark Redmond, who is Tallaght’s Crime Prevention Officer, has advised people to implement a number of security measures when leaving their home unoccupied – which starts with checking that all windows and doors are locked and the alarm set.
Sgt Redmond also recommended using light timer switches, have post collected and ask a neighbour or family member to conduct frequent checks.
Cutting grass and hedges before heading off on holidays is also recommended, so that the home doesn’t look neglected.
“I’d also remind people to keep keys or other valuable items out of sight and away from front doors,” he said.
“This summer we have had a slight increase in phishing.
“We’ve had a number of keys phished out through letter boxes by telescopic rods with magnetic ends.”
He added: “I’d also like to remind people not to be taking pictures of themselves standing in front of the Taj Mahal and posting them on social media – you’re just posting that your home is empty.”
Holiday makers have also been advised not to tag others in their holiday photographs without permission.
This Saturday morning (June 30) officers from Tallaght Garda Station visited The Square to hand out information on home security during the holiday season.
