September Sports Star of the Month: Cara Byrne

CARA Byrne from Newland’s Taekwon-Do was celebrating in September when she became world champion after winning gold in sparring at the World Championships in Finland.

Representing her country in the championships, Byrne, secured her medals after seeing off competitors from Argentina, Ukraine and Slovenia “I’m delighted to win the medals and this award.

“It was a great championship for me and my club and we were delighted to come away with the medals,” said a delighted Cara Byrne.

“The fighters in the championships were very tough and the experience I picked up from the competition was great for me,” said Cara.

It’s going to be a busy time ahead for Cara who will be competing in the Limerick Open next month and the Dutch Open in January.

It was an excellent result for Byrne and her club Newland’s Taekwon-Do who celebrated its 15th anniversary last month.

The team will now return to training in preparation for the European Championships in Lublin, Poland in April 2024.
