Shaw insists Rovers owe fans a derby win

GARY Shaw insists Shamrock Rovers owe it to their fans to emerge top in tomorrow night’s Dublin derby against Bohemians in Tallaght Stadium after their early exit from the FAI Cup at the hands of Drogheda United.

The Hoops, after having been reduced to ten men following the dismissal of defender Lee Grace, ultimately succumbed to Chris Lyon’s penalty.

For Shaw, it was a heavy blow especially in view of the big numbers that travelled to United Park to support them.

“The result on Friday was just terrible. There’s no other way to describe it,” he told The Echo.

“The fans had come up there in their numbers and we sent them home unhappy. We have to make that up to them and what better way to do it than in a Dublin derby against Bohs.

“I’ve played in a good few Dublin derbies and there’s no feeling like it.

“This is one the fans circle on their calendar and it’s the last one of the season so we’ll want to get a good result.”

The desire to get a win tomorrow night is fuelled by the two painful results Stephen Bradley’s side have suffered at the hands of the Gypsies this season.

Indeed, despite having led in their two encounters in April and their season opener in February, they finished up empty-handed as Bohs produced impressive comebacks to steal the spoils on both counts.

It is just another reason for Rovers to pull out all the stops in an effort to win tomorrow, according to Shaw.

“Bohs have had some good results in the league and cup,” he pointed out. “They know what they did to us in the previous games this season and they’ll want to remind us of that.

“The opening day was a hard one to take. It was just a calamity of a second half and then that match [in April] when we conceded well into stoppage time.

“In our mind we’ll be thinking about that European spot so we’ll be really going for that win,” he stressed.
