Sing-along encourages self confidence and development
By Mary Dennehy
A TALLAGHT native is hosting a free Community Sing-Along in St Kevin’s Community Centre in Blessington this July, with the aim of encouraging positive social development and self-confidence through song.
Rachel O’Brien Drew has been a singer and performer for almost 20 years and over that time has discovered the positive effect that music has on young people.

Rachel recently launched a new children’s summer camp called Let’s Sing! – which aims to improve self-confidence and social skills through singing while also providing a foundation of musical knowledge.
This July 5, Rachel will host a Community Sing-Along from 11am to 12pm in St Kevin’s Community Centre in Blessington, with the event aimed at children aged 0 to 12 years.
All children, who must be accompanied by an adult, will enjoy singing games and activities.
According to Rachel: “The Community Sing-Along is a great opportunity for parents and families to experience the musical education programme and pick up some tips for singing at home with their children and encouraging positive social development skills.
“Music has had a huge impact on my own life and I am excited to share that with the community.”
She added: “Research has shown that singing can prove highly beneficial to the social, emotional and physical development of children and even adults.”
Information on the summer camp, which runs in St Kevin’s from July 23 to July 27, will also be available on the day.
Alongside a summer camp, Let’s Sing! also offers weekly Toddler Music Classes (13 months to three years) as well as Family Music Classes (0 to five years).
