Snapshot guide to daily activities for the over-55s

By Mary Dennehy

FROM sports to computers and art to gardening, there’s a diverse and vibrant selection of daily activities for local residents over the age of 55 – and all easily accessible within communities.

The Community Development Team of South Dublin County Council have produced a guide called 55+ Daily Activity South Dublin County 2018.

Activity guide 55

Reaching 108 pages, the guide is a snapshot of just some of the many activities and community groups for older people in Clondalkin, Lucan, Palmerstown, Rathfarnham, Tallaght, Templeogue, Terenure and rural South Dublin County.

The activity booklet highlights opportunities for older people to engage in arts and cultural activities, social events, outings, sport and physical activity as well as details of where locals can meet like-minded people for a cuppa and a chat.

According to the council: “We hope the information provided will inspire [those aged] 55 plus to reach their full potential…and have an enjoyable time meeting old friends and making new ones.”

The easy-to-read guide contains not only daily activities but contacts for local community centres and groups such as Men’s Sheds, social clubs, family resource centres, libraries, local services for older people and much more.

There are also useful contacts for citywide and national groups that provide advice and advocate on behalf of older people, alongside community health initiatives in both Tallaght and Clondalkin.

The 55+ Activity guide is available from all council offices and local libraries.
