Snow and ice weather warning issued

A YELLOW weather warning is in place today for snow and ice, with An Garda Siochana asking road users to check local weather and traffic conditions before setting off on any journeys.

Snow is expected to fall across a number of areas nationwide, include Leinster, which may lead to hazardous conditions on roads and footpaths, with temperatures expected to dip as low at -2 in places.

Following today's snow, road temperatures nationwide will fall, with road conditions set to be hazardous overnight and tomorrow morning.

Gardai have advised motorists to clear windows and mirrors before setting out and to carry a screen scraper and d-icer – do not use hot water on the windscreen.

People have also been advised to never leave their car unattended with the engine running in an attempt to clear the windows, with a number of car thefts occurring every frosty morning.

While driving in hazardous conditions, gardai have advised drivers to reduce speed and increase braking distances, use dipped headlights at all times and watch out for vulnerable roads users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists and allow extra space.

Cyclists and motorcyclists should check local road conditions and consider alternative transport where necessary and pedestrians should walk on a footpath, not on the street, and walk on the right hand side of the road, facing traffic if there are no footpaths.
