BELGARD Athletic F.C are aiming to run 3750km in 30 days in order to raise money for Pieta House.

Starting the fundraiser on February 10, the club received over €4,000 in donations in the first few days. The club aims to take on roughly 120km each over the 30 days. The total distance will equal a full lap of the Coast of Ireland.

Manager Graham Costigan said: “With lockdown, I can see the change in the players and the effect on their mental health, so we thought it was a suitable charity to raise money for.

“I think everyone has been touched somehow from mental illness at some stage of their lives be it themselves, family or friends and know how important these vital services that Pieta House provide are.”

The GoFundMe page for the fundraiser reads:

“Belgard AFC are trying to raise some much needed funds for pieta house. Everyone realises during this last year times have been very tough for everyone and mental health has been severely tested. The fantastic work Pieta House does for those in need and distress is amazing and free of charge so they rely on fundraising to keep them going.”

The club have shown their appreciation for the generosity from the public donations in a post on their Facebook page.

“Just over six days ago we launched our fundraiser for Pieta House, we’ve had some amazing support and donations have now hit over €4000. We at Belgard want to thank everyone for their donations- we really appreciate it!”
