Social Democrats councillor steps down citing workload and family commitments

SOCIAL Democrats councillor Carly Bailey stepped down from her position at South Dublin County Council this week – citing a heavy workload and family commitments as the reason for her resignation.

Ms Bailey, a councillor since 2019 and a lawyer, said it had become “increasingly more difficult to hold a job, raise a family and manage my council responsibilities and case work.”

She informed her fellow councillors on Wednesday night and took to social media the next day to confirm the announcement.

“It has been an extraordinary honour to represent our community on South Dublin County Council.

While I wasn’t successful in getting everything I believed we needed and deserved, I hope I have left the area better than I found it,” said Ms Bailey.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank every one for all their positive engagement and support over the last four-and-a-half years.

“It has been a privilege and experience that I will never forget.” She hopes to see a little more of her husband and children.

“Representing the Rathfarnham and Templeogue electorate, Bailey said a co-option will take place at the November council meeting.

“We have been fortunate to find a great person who has the capacity to be able to continue in the role, and I will provide more information on that in the coming days,” she said.

“I’ll still be working in policy and politics and will continue to fight for change, but in a different way.

“Reform of local government couldn’t come soon enough.”

Ms Bailey is currently an employee of the party where she works as women’s development manager.

She is also the social policy officer with the One Family organisation.
