South Dublin Libraries celebrate Pride Month with a sea of colour

South Dublin Libraries held a vibrant programme of events in celebration of Pride Month throughout June.

The highlight of the month was the involvement of the mobile library and staff in the Dublin Pride Parade on June 24, showing  support for their LGBTQ+ colleagues and the wider community.

Library staff marched alongside the Mayor of South Dublin County, Cllr. Emma Murphy, councillors, SDCC colleagues and members of Comhairle na nÓg, and the city was a sea of colour as the parade made its way from O’Connell Street to Merrion Square on a gloriously sunny day in Dublin.

South Dublin Libraries’ active participation in the parade aimed to show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community and reinforced the message that ‘libraries are for everyone’.

In addition to participation in the parade, South Dublin Libraries organised a variety of Pride Month events, including film screenings, Drag Bingo, a talk with historian Tonie Walsh on the ‘Queer History of Dublin’, the ‘Living with Pride’ exhibition of photographs by Christopher Robson, and inclusive story times.

Pride Month also allowed them to highlight their diverse collection of LGBTQ+ books, films, and other materials which serve as a valuable resource for individuals seeking knowledge and representation, and affirm the role of libraries as inclusive spaces that support all members of the community.

The Pin Your Pride programme returned for 2023, where patrons could collect a different Pride themed badge at their library each week for the month of June, the badges were also distributed at the Pride Parade.

South Dublin Libraries will continue to stand proudly alongside the LGBTQ+ community, promoting diversity and inclusivity that is at the heart of the public library service.
