South Dublin Taekwondo athletes delivered the goods in Polish Open
SOUTH Dublin Taekwon-do fielded a mixed group of experienced and development athletes in the World Ranking Polish Open in Warsaw last weekend.
The two-day event, which involved some 1000 athletes from 50 countries, promised to be a memorable one for Jed Rena (-33kg Male Cadet) as he picked up his first world ranking event medal with a tremendous display of speed kicking and spinning that earned him the bronze.
David Phelan maintained his good form this year by securing a hard-fought silver in his -53kg category after five demanding fights.
SDTKD seniors Jack Woolley (-58kg Male) and Shauna Bannon (-57kg Female) both had three tough contests and both securing fifth place finishes.
'It was a tough event, with some very big divisions” recalled South Dublin TWD Coach Robert Taaffe.
“We had some mixed fortunes. Jed and David really shone in the cadet divisions and gave the crowd a spectacular show.
“Jack moved up to flyweight for the first time at an open event and looked comfortable- a good preparation for next weekend’s Grand Prix in Morocco.
“Shauna had her best outing to date, utilising her adapted kickboxing assets, beating some very experienced players including a high-seeded European Champion and Grand Prix fighter.
“Also very importantly we had some good tests for other athletes who didn’t quite get the wins hoped for, but got to demonstrate the output of their recent training so they can adapt and move forward” he added.
