Sport Year in Review 2019: July

AFTER a year out of competition, Belgard Athletic made a swift return to action by re-entering the Leinster Senior League and United Churches Football League meanwhile Bangor Celtic and Greenhills/Green-park joined forces in the LSL.
HAVING ran to glory at the National Junior and Under 23 Championships, Tallaght Athletic Club’s Rhasidat Adeleke stormed to victory in 100m and 200m events at the European Youth Olympics in Baku, and was named The Echo Sports Star of the Month for July because of her achievements.

TEMPLEOGUE-registered swimmer Molly Mayne landed a bronze medal at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Baku, touching home in a time of 2:30.76 in the 200m Breathstroke.
AT THE same National Junior and Under 23 Championships in Tullamore, Donore Harriers athletes Louis O’Loughlin and Jack Raftery captured gold medals and Aoife Lynch a bronze.
THERE was plenty of local success in the National Boy and Junior Cadet Boxing Champion-ships in the National Stadium with Neilstown’s Ryan Murphy, Jobstown’s Adam Olaniyan and Drimnagh’s Kai Griffin all winning their respective titles.
FOLLOWING a major win over Galway that saw them into the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship preliminary quarter-final, Dublin saw their campaign cut short by a dogged Laois outfit.
TALLAGHT’S Mipo Odubeko became a free agent when he rejected a fresh deal with Manchester United after netting 35 goals for the Red Devils academy last season, later opting to sign for West Ham United in October.
TEMPLEOGUE’S Nadia Power battled her way to a brilliant bronze medal in the Women’s 800m at the European Under 23 Athletics Championships in Gavle, Sweden.

TALLAGHT Swim Club and National Centre competitor Brendan Hyland clocked a new PB and Irish record of 1:56.55 at the FINA World Swimming Championships in South Korea, just fractionally outside the 200m butterfly standard of 1:56.48 for Olympic Games qualification.
THERE was plenty of success for locals at the National Under 18 Boxing Championships with Crumlin BC’s William Hayden claiming his 11th national title while Jobstown BC’s Ryan Dunne landed the 49kg title.
CAPTURING the Minor Football League Division One title with a comprehensive 2-18 to 0-3 win over Na Fianna, Lucan Sarsfields were declared The Echo Team of the Month for July.

DUNDRUM South Dublin AC’s women ran back to the pinnacle of National League athletics to reclaim the Premier Ladies during the AAI National League Final in Tullamore.
THE National Senior Track and Field Championships saw success for clubs as Donore Harriers claimed five medals, Tallaght AC’s Eoin Doherty, Simon Essuman, Timmy Bada, Joseph Ojewumi and Michael Ogunisiakan seized the 4×100 Relay crown, and DSD’s Hiko Tonosa won the 5000m.
CHECKMAT Dublin’s Nathan O’Callaghan claimed gold in his first ever competition at the World Junior Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Championships with his team-mates Luke Fleet and Lana Kelly claiming silver.
DUBLIN were crowned Leinster Under 20 Football champions as Ballyboden St Enda’s pair Kieran Kennedy and Ross McGarry helped them to a 4-18 to 0-17 triumph over Laois in the decider.
