Sport Year in Review 2019: September

THE COUNTY turned blue in September as Dublin Ladies captured their third All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in succession and Jim Gavin’s side completed a historic ‘Drive for Five’ by beating Kerry to become the first Senior Men’s team to win the All-Ireland five times in-a-row.

IT WAS another great return for Ireland’s young tenpin bowlers at the 2019 Triple Crown as they scooped no less than 63 medals and also successfully defended their Under 16 Shield title.
KILNAMANAGH native Katie McCabe marked an encouraging start to Republic of Ireland’s EURO 2021 campaign with a goal in their 2-0 victory over Montenegro in Tallaght Stadium.
ADDING to the medal tally for Team Ireland at the tournament for Children, Cadets and Juniors was Zak Riddell, who claimed Bronze and Bushido MA lads Zach Lamari and Aranas Orlovas also made podium finishes.
GOLF took centre stage at the beginning of September when Lucan Golf Club bridged an eight-year gap since previously raising the Metropolitan Trophy while Newlands Golf Club completed a double by winning the Ladies AIG East Leinster Junior Cup and Junior Foursomes Finals.
HAVING suffered defeat in the Leinster Mixed Foursomes Final on four occasions, Castle Golf Club captured the provincial title and went on to raise the All-Ireland prize as well- being named The Echo Team of the Month as a result.

ROWAN Lester of Hermitage Golf Club played a leading role in seeing Leinster to victory at the Interprovincial Championships as David Horan captured the National Under 20 Pitch and Putt title.
FORMER Dundalk captain Stephen O’Donnell was named St Patrick’s Athletic new manager.
ANN WOODLOCK from Donore Harriers won silver in the W80 1500m at the European Masters Athletics Championships and later added the 5000m gold medal to her haul.

YOUNG athletes from South Dublin Special Olympics Club, Orla Garvey, Abigail Homan, Ciara O’Brien and Rachel Murray won 20 medals between them in Rhythmic Gymnastics at the European Championships.
FOR THE first time in the club’s history, Thomas Davis were promoted to the top ranks of the Senior Hurling Championship for 2020 after confirming their spot in the Senior ‘B’ Final, later losing Scoil Ui Chonaill.
TALLAGHT’S Anthony Cross completed his march to the 2019 Selco.ie Formula Vee Championship title.
MORE than 400 competitors took part as Tallaght Martial Arts hosted the first kickboxing tournament to be held in the National Sports Campus in Abbotstown with their athletes claiming 26 Gold, 18 Silver and 21 Bronze.
BMA Clondalkin was well represented at the TMA Open with several competitors making the podium.
AT THE 60th Annual Liffey Descent, Ireland international kayaker Jenny Egan emerged first in the Mixed K2 with her fiancé Jonathan Simmons while her brother Peter Egan claimed the K1 title.

DBS Éanna blasted out of the blocks on their return to action in the Men’s Super League as they recorded a 54-76 victory over county rivals Abbey Seals Dublin Lions.
ALSO in the world of basketball, Griffith College Templeogue recorded a 74-53 point victory over Swords Thunder in what was the club’s first ever match in the Women’s National League.
SAMUEL Ilesanmi of St Mary’s BC, Crumlin BC’s Michael Rudolf, Jordan Carney of Drimnagh BC, Westside’s Alabi Lateaf and Mount Tallant’s Kevin Cummins were all among the winners at the National Novice Boxing Championships.
LUCAN man Denis Crowley was the indisputable star for Ireland at the World Masters Rowing Championships in Lake Velence, boasting a haul of eight gold medals by the close of proceedings and was named The Echo Sports Star of the Month for September for his unrivalled performance.
TALLAGHT man Vinny Perth lead Dundalk to their fifth SSE Airtricity League title in six seasons, beating Shamrock Rovers 3-2 to confirm the prize.
