SOUTH Dublin County’s Health and Wellbeing Week springs into action on September 18, with people of all ages, interests and abilities encouraged to participate in a range of events that promote healthy thinking, eating and exercise.

Organised by South Dublin County Council, Health and Wellbeing Week sees more than 80 easily accessible and free events planned in local communities across Tallaght, Clondalkin, Lucan, Palmerstown, Rathfarnham, Templeogue and Ballyroan.

Running in local libraries and other community settings, the programme of events includes physical activity for school kids, minding your mental health, a winter colour flower workshop, a guided family mountain walk, laughter yoga, healthy cooking sessions, stretch ’n’ grow, music therapy, art therapy, hand massage workshops, blood pressure check clinics, occupational first aid, grow your own fruit and veg, and walks, art and massage for people with Alzheimer’s.

The Tallaght Community Health Fair will also take place in Tallaght Stadium from 10am to 1pm on Tuesday, September 19, while an Alcohol Seminar will be hosted in the venue on Wednesday, September 20.

Looking forward to the week, County Mayor Paul Gogarty said: “Health and Wellbeing Week is a great opportunity for young and older people of all abilities and interests to participate in a range of activities and events, which encourages well–being and the development of healthy thinking, eating and exercise.

“There are great opportunities for people to get involved throughout all our communities; there is literally something for everybody.”

Last October, South Dublin County Council achieved Healthy County status as part of the World Health Organisation’s Healthy Cities and Counties of Ireland Network, which the local authority believes highlights the “prog-ressive” efforts that have been made across the county in recent years.

According to Daniel McLoughlin, South Dublin County Council Chief Executive, he said: “The health and wellbeing of our population is a measure of our success as a society.

“As a local authority we influence physical and mental wellbeing through social inclusion events, as lead agency in interagency initiatives, recreational activities, library services, employment creation, housing supply, community infrastructure and financial supports.

“South Dublin County Council is very conscious of its role in this regard and continues to promote the wellbeing of our citizens as a priority objective of service delivery.”
