St Mary’s women storm to Division One title

A 25-0 VICTORY over Railway Union saw St Mary’s RFC take the final step on the road to the Women’s Leinster League Division One title in Naas last Sunday.

Having met Railway twice before in the league, winning the first match 26-0 and losing the second 10-5, Mary’s were not taking this challenge lightly.

The Templeville Road side was dominant from the outset, playing territory and keeping Railway in their own 22 with the help of out-half Sarah Duignan.

Niamh Fitzgerald broke through the Railway defence and crashed over the line to the right of the posts with Shayne Richardson tagging on the extras.

After a very short turnaround, Paula Fitzpatrick’s immense carry got Mary’s over the line once again. Richardson took the kick, but pulled it slightly to the right, hitting the post.

Just before half-time, the girls-in-blue managed to put more points on the board when captain Aoife Moore picked the ball from the base of a five-metre scrum and dotted down with Richardson splitting the posts to help make it 19-0 at break.

Came back fighting

Railway came back fighting upon the restart, making a number of line breaks, but they were met with a solid wall of blue.

Two penalties were awarded to Mary’s, on which Richardson capitalised to help ensure the title was heading to Templeville Road.

Mary’s are now into the provincial qualifiers, playing for promotion back to the AIL.
