Steering group to support GAA Club is wound up by city council

A STEERING group set up by Dublin City Council to help Liffey Gaels GAA club is to be wound up by early next month.

Work started over two years ago between the city council and the Sarsfield Road club, who were experiencing problems at the time.

This work included proposals for a development plan for the clubhouse and a masterplan for the grounds.

However, Liffey Gaels subsequently merged with another GAA club Good Counsel and this has changed the original purpose of the working group.

At the recent Dublin South Central area meeting, Cllr Daithí Doolan (SF), asked the council if the strategic planning group and draft plans in place are still in place, or has it been overtaken by proposals Liffey Gaels have themselves.

In response, Bruce Philips, Assistant Area Manager Dublin City Council said: “When we started out this programme with Liffey Gaels about two years ago, we were in a very different position.

“We set out to help them because Liffey Gaels was struggling as a GAA club but since amalgamating very successfully with Our Lady of Good Counsel that formed a combined club, that development plan we started with Liffey Gaels has not been given the support that we really wanted from the combined club to finish it off.

“But we did develop a masterplan for a park and I intend to call a meeting and that is the final meeting to wind up this steering group in early June,” said Mr Philips.

The meeting on either June6/7 is to present the masterplan for the park and also a final version of the development plan.

In November 2021, the two clubs announced “a bit of history” with the first AGM of Good Counsel Liffey Gaels GAA and Camogie Club.
