Glenanne girls celebrate winning the Leinster Girls Inter Division Five

Success for Glenanne hockey club women’s teams

GLENANNE girls Inter team won the Leinster Girls Inter Division Five after they overcame Three Rock Rovers in the play-off final by a score of 5:0 on Sunday.

The Glenanne girls had a slow start to the season which started back in September with a loss to Three Rock Rovers and two draws followed in October in a home game against Wexford and an away game against Muckross.

However, after this the Glenanne girls turned a corner and went on a winning run from November to the end of the season and included wins against Genesis, Pembroke Wanderers, Naas, Weston and Our Lady’s.

A road trip to Pool 2 winners Tullamore for a semi-final play-off last month was the reward for finishing second in Pool 1.

A winning scoreline of 4-1 in Tullamore set up a finals day rematch with Three Rock Rovers, the only team that had beaten the Glenanne girls this season.

Having weathered early attacks from Three Rock Rovers, the Glenanne girls struck the first of their four first half goals after seven minutes through Zoe Williamson.

From that point Glenanne dominated the first half with further scores from penalty corners and some excellent field play.

Another goal in the second half set up a 5-0 victory with Zoe Williamson and Izzy Bolger sharing the five goals between them.

Meanwhile, Glenanne’s women’s second team were celebrating at the weekend after completing the double by securng the shield crown after earlier in the season capturing the league title.

Glennane women’s second team completed a historic double

The women’s team were back in Three Rock Rovers for the second year in a row in the Division 5/6 Shield Final.

Last year they stopped Bray from completing the League/Shield double and this year found themselves looking at the ‘double’ with Avoca standing in their way of a hugely successful season with the Tallaght side winning out 2- 0.

Glenanne, having come out on top against Avoca twice in the league during the season and as defending Shield champions would have been considered ‘the favourites’ to come out victors on the day.

While both teams started out nervously, it was Glenanne who had their share of chances in front of goal with Anna Keogh and Niamh McCarthy linking well with the midfielders to see their shots saved by a strong Avoca goalkeeper.

Despite the chances, the half time score was 0-0.

The second half Glenanne came out fighting and a three minute spell saw the shield holders go 2-0 up.

The first came from Anna Keogh who ran down the righthand side of the pitch, across the baseline and with a reverse shot, saw the ball deflect in off the keepers shoulders.

Less than three minutes later a Glenanne short corner link of Sine Finn & Niamh McCarthy had Finn hit from the top right of the circle and McCarthy deflect in for Glenanne’s second goal of the day.

With a 2-0 lead going into the last quarter, Glenanne held out to the final whistle to be crowned Division 5/6 Shield winners for the 2nd year in a row.
