Survivors are opposed to new car park at Mother and Baby home site

SURVIVORS from St Patrick’s Mother and Baby Home on Navan Road are opposed to ongoing works to build a car park at the site – citing the need to wait until the findings from the Mother and Baby Home Commission report in January.

The annual vigil held by survivors at the former institution, had to move to another part of the site, due to works for the car park.

Clondalkin resident David Kinsella, who was born in St Patrick’s and never saw his birth mother again, believes building works should be put on hold until the final report of the Commission on January 11.

“The former grounds are being dug up to make a car park. Survivors are totally in the dark as to notifications about this dig and it is a similar situation in Bessborough House in Cork (former Mother and Baby Home).

They are building apartments on the Bessborough grounds, where there is clear and present danger, and evidence of mass graves.

“There is a possibility that graves are also in the grounds of St Patrick’s. The Sisters of Charity, ran both St Patrick’s and Smyllum Park Orphanage in Scotland, where 400 children were discovered in a mass grave in 2017.

“Why can’t building works be put on hold until the final report that is being published on January 11, that could confirm mass graves and other measures of recommendations.”

Kinsella and many other survivors are seeking a State apology, redress, and support for health and wellbeing needs.

“This is something survivors have already got in Smyllum and Northern Ireland,” said Kinsella.
