Tallaght Community Health Awareness Month: Free events for all…

OCTOBER is Tallaght Health Awareness Month, with everyone invited to engage in the third year of the community-based programme.

Over the next four weeks, local centres and community hubs will host a diverse selection of free health and wellbeing events, and everyone is invited.

Through accessible, walk-in events, the practical and relevant programme brings services into the heart of communities, providing people with an opportunity to engage with local services.

Alongside connecting with their community and learning about local supports and services, participants will receive information that can have a positive impact on their health or a family member’s physical or mental wellbeing.

Week one of the programme kicked off on Monday, October 2, and includes activities such as Zumba, a COPD exercise class, a healthy eating taster for older adults and lifesaving skills/AED training.

Week two’s schedule has also been released (see below) and has a jewellery workshop in Fettercairn, smoking cessation awareness/support and a talk on Sepsis and its signs, symptoms and prevention.

The programme also has a strong focus on health checks such as blood pressure and BMI (Body Mass Index), with testing available in Killinarden Pharmacy Hub, McCabe’s Citywest, Hickey’s Springfield, Rossfield Pharmacy, Killinarden Pharmacy and Jobstown Pharmacy.

A Health Check Day is also being held in the Fettercairn Community Centre from 10am to 12pm on October 10.

The Marie Keating Foundation will visit the Firhouse Community Centre on October 11 from 10am to 12pm, with the team providing information and answering any cancer concerns from both men and women.

The Tallaght Community Health Awareness Month is organised by the Fettercairn Health Project, which is part of the South Dublin County Partnership.

Speaking with The Echo, Samantha Griffin, Fettercairn Health Project co-ordinator, encouraged everyone to engage in at least one event.

“There are events for all, everyone in the community is invited to come along”, Samantha said.

For further information follow the Fettercairn Health Project or South Dublin County Partnership on Facebook.

Each Thursday, The Echo Newspaper will publish the coming week’s events.
