Tallaght Fire Station organise 90km cycle to fight blindness
By Mary Dennehy
TALLAGHT parents Brian and Tracey Whelan are taking part in a 90km charity cycles that peddles off from Tallaght Fire Station at 9.30am tomorrow morning (Saturday).
Organised by firefighters in Tallaght and Dolphin’s Barn, the event will see a team of 30 saddle up and cycle from Tallaght Fire Station to Carlow, in a bid to raise funds for Irish charity Fighting Blindness.
Originally from Kilnamanagh and now living in Firhouse, Brian, Tracey and their 11-year-old daughter Emma, who has a genetic eye condition, receive support from the charity – which has a vision to cure blindness and support and empower patients.
This year, a number of Dublin fire stations have chosen Fighting Blindness as their charity, with firefighters recently staging a fundraiser in The Square shopping centre.
Brian told Echo.ie: “Two of my friends work in Dolphin’s Barn [fire station] and they put Fighting Blindness forward as this year’s charity.
“We are so grateful and can’t thank everyone enough for their support so far.
“All of the money will go to Fighting Blindness and its research.”
He added: “We’re encouraging as many people as possible to support our cycle tomorrow and people can donate on our fundraising page.”
