GARDAI at Tallaght continued with their anti-crime and burglary operation this week, with 16 people arrested on Wednesday for various offences and outstanding warrants, reports Mary Dennehy.

On Wednesday, April 11, 16 people were picked up by Tallaght gardai in a targeted operation that was ongoing as The Echo went to print.

At this stage on Wednesday evening, 16 people had been arrested for outstanding warrants and various offences, such as thefts, burglaries and fire arms offences.

The Echo understands that 11 of those arrested appeared before court on Wednesday, some of whom are still in custody, with some released on bail.

According to Tallaght Superintendent Ian Lackey, the arrests are partly down to extra resources at the station – which included the arrival of ten new recruits last week.

The Burglary Response Unit for the DMR Division, which includes Tallaght, Crumlin, Terenure, Rathfarnham, Sundrive and Rathmines, was also moved to Tallaght in recent weeks – after being based in Crumlin for a number of years.

Supt Lackey said: “The Burglary Response Unit still has a divisional remit however, they are based in Tallaght now and are focusing their [current] operation on the area.

“They also engage in check points, searches and crime prevention.”

He added: “We’ve also had the horses up in West Tallaght as well this week, which gives more visibility and is a great way of getting the kids’ attention.

“We find that generally people come over [to the gardai] when they are on horses.”

The operation on Wednesday complements a similar, targeted operation on March 27, which, also led by Tallaght Garda Station, resulted in the arrest of nine people.
