Tallaght’s Katie McCabe named captain of Republic of Ireland Women’s team
Tallaght’s Katie McCabe has this evening been named captain of the Republic of Ireland Women’s team.
The Kilnamanagh native takes over the role from Emma Byrne who announced her international retirement yesterday.

McCabe moved to Arsenal in 2015 after a hugely successful time at Raheny, and this week the 21-year-old went on loan to Glasgow City for the remainder of the season.
The influential player will lead the Irish team into the 2019 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, and speaking today she said: "It's a huge honour to have been selected to be captain of the national team.
“It’s a huge moment for me personally but also my family who have always supported me on my football journey.
She continued: “I’d like to also thank Emma Byrne for her guidance and leadership as captain over the last few years, and I hope I can fill her boots for the team.
